The Path to Public Service Leads Home
Michael Tubbs, who grew up on the south side of Stockton, CA, with a single mother and a father in prison, became the first Coca-Cola Alumni Legacy Scholar in 2008.
“My aspirations for the immediate, near and long term future are to do everything I can to put my community on the right track.”
After graduating from Stanford University he chose to return to his hometown to become the youngest City Councilman in the history of Stockton, at age 22. He was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey — the only other candidate she ever endorsed were Barack Obama and Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, N.J. – and won 60% of a citywide vote.
Michael firmly believes that finding local solutions to today’s most pressing social problems can ultimately benefit the whole country.
