Founded in 1986, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is much more than a program that awards college financial assistance to exceptional high school seniors. Our organization connects and continually nurtures an extended family of passionate, motivated, service-oriented leaders. This lifetime connection, camaraderie and sense of family are what make the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation unique among scholarship programs.

In 2015 we welcomed our 27th class of Coca-Cola Scholars. Our awardees came from 35 states, and were 56% female and 44% male.

Legacy Fund

Reading Committee
30 education professionals read our Semifinalist applications and recommended 250 Regional Finalists for advancement through our selection process.
Regional Interviews
Alumni partnered with staff to interview 250 Regional Finalists in each of our 10 Selection Districts and identified 150 Coca-Cola Scholars.
Leadership Development
These Scholar alumni facilitated the 2015 Leadership Development Institute, an intensive leadership training that challenged the newest class of Coca-Cola Scholars to develop an inside-out leadership philosophy during Scholars Weekend.
Legacy Circle
The Coca-Cola Scholars Legacy Circle recognizes those who contribute the current value of our scholarship or more to the Coca-Cola Scholars Legacy Fund.

It was with sincere admiration and deep sentiment that we announced in summer 2015 that Patti Ross, Coca-Cola Scholars Vice President, would be retiring after over 20 years of service to our program. Patti has been the heart of the Scholars Program, and her dedication to each and every Scholar has been unwavering. As a token of our thanks, we orchestrated a special toast for Patti during Scholars Weekend, and also launched a tribute gift campaign to the Coca-Cola Scholars Legacy Fund in Patti’s honor. It was a fitting gesture, given the impact she has had in building programming and lifelong enrichment that means so much to so many of us.
As a result of this outreach, Scholar alumni donated more than $12,000 toward the Legacy Fund in Patti’s name—a gift that supports new, innovative programs for our growing Scholar and alumni network across the world: leadership development, service, mentoring, events, career networking, enrichment, and more!

Receptions
Receptions hosted around the country that provide an opportunity for Scholars and alumni to network, socialize and connect with the Foundation.
AAB Retreat
A weekend in November dedicated to allowing members of our Alumni Advisory Board to generate ideas that showcase and sustain our alumni network as well as create alumni experiences unique to Coca-Cola Scholars.
Reading Weekend
One weekend out of our year where 30 invited education professionals (including 7 Coca-Cola Scholars in 2015) travel to Atlanta to read and evaluate all 2,200 Semifinalist applications and recommend 250 Regional Finalists.
Regional Interviews
Formal interviews in which 10 teams of 3, comprised of 2 Coca-Cola Scholar alumni and 1 staff member, meet in several locations across the country with our 250 Regional Finalists to select 150 Coca-Cola Scholars. While in town, we host fun, informal receptions for our local alumni.
Scholars Weekend
The highlight of our year, when the newest 150 Coca-Cola Scholars come to Atlanta to meet their peers for a day of inspiration, fun, camaraderie, and participate in our Leadership Development Institute, an intensive leadership training session facilitated by 30 Coca-Cola Scholar alumni.

25 Coca-Cola Scholars partnered with Amplify 4 Good to use entrepreneurial methodologies to create innovative solutions for 2 Scholar-led nonprofits and our own organization. In just 5 hours, groups brainstormed ways to improve their processes, and 4 judges selected the most impactful solution.

Sara Volz won the top $100,000 award in the Intel Science Talent Search after conducting an experiment that prompted algae to increase oil production, resulting in the creation of a powerful alternative to energy from fossil fuel. Intel’s Search is a force in the quest to support students interested in STEM entrepreneurship and careers: over 2,900 finalists have received more than $13 million in awards to support their college educations, and thousands of semifinalists have received millions more. Christopher Gray and his app, Scholly, have had an incredible year, first winning 1st place in Under Armour‘s pitch competition (an award of $75,000), an additional $5,000 from Salesforce, and making a deal on Shark Tank, trading $40,000 for a 15 percent stake with Lori Greiner and Daymond John. Scholly allows students and parents to search for college scholarships and is partnering with President Obama’s organization My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, which will supply participants free access to the app. Watch Christopher’s pitch and the Shark fight that ensued here, and download it at the iTunes app store, where it’s a #1 rated app.

Neha Gupta became the first American to receive the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2014, receiving the honor for her work with Empower Orphans, an organization she began when 9 years old. The mission of Empower Orphans is to elevate the wellbeing of orphaned and underprivileged children and empower them to succeed, by helping them help themselves. Desmond Tutu presented Neha with her award in The Hague, Netherlands on the award’s 10th anniversary.

In 2014, the state of South Dakota established Jolene’s Law in honor of Coca-Cola Scholar Jolene Loetscher. The law creates a task force dedicated to researching the impact of child sexual abuse in South Dakota and works to generate legislative policies to prosecute and bring an end to this horrifying act. Further, despite opposition by some legislators in 2015 to continue the task force, South Dakota’s Governor announced an executive order in March 2015 allowing Jolene’s Law to continue its work.

A photograph taken by Julian Plowden of Atlanta’s August 2014 Ferguson solidarity march will be included in an upcoming exhibit at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Julian has been covering the Black Lives Matter movement throughout the United States, and his images have been exhibited at the Hammonds House Museum and Emory University. Coca-Cola Scholar Ben Sasse topped his already impressive career in federal government, academia, and the private sector with his first term in Congress in 2014, becoming a Senator serving the state of Nebraska. He serves on the committees for Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Joint Economic Committee, and the Senate’s Special Committee on Aging, to name just a few of his assignments. In 2014, Coca-Cola Scholars welcomed to its ranks a pioneering first: the youngest woman to be elected to Congress. Elise Sefanik now represents New York’s sprawling 21st district in the U.S. House of Representatives, making the 30-year-old Harvard graduate the youngest female ever elected to the post. Since joining her colleagues on the Hill, she’s been tasked with chairing the House Republican Policy Committee’s new Millennial Task Force to tackle issues facing her generation. A part of the Venture Capital group, Chheda branched out to become Co-founder of Romulus Capital, a company keen to invest in early-stage start-ups and with a focus on “building great companies.” Their portfolio includes companies such as ScholarLocker, study aids, forums and support for medical students by others in their field; Gyft, an app that helps people buy, send and track gift cards; and Soundtracker, a music-sharing app that helps users discover what their friends and neighbors are listening to and make friends around the world through music.

Zachary received a Teen Nick HALO Award for July in honor of his non-profit SNAP, Inc., which he co-founded with his brother Matthew, who is 2009 a Coca-Cola Scholar. SNAP, Inc. stands for Special Needs Athletic Programs and helps children with autism through sports programs. 2014 Scholars Yash Gupta and Nicholas Cobb also received HALO Awards - Yash for his organization Sight Learning, which donates glasses to students in need, and Nicholas for his nonprofit Comfort and Joy that collects coats for the homeless.
